Course on Sociology of Health, Ilness and medicine – Professor Michael Calnan from University of Kent and Professors Silvana Leite and Mareni Farias from UFSC

In March 2019 we received the visit of Professor Michael Calnan, a sociologist of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research*. During one week, Prof. Michael gave 4 lectures and promoted debates on themes such as Dignity in healthcare, changing domains in sociology of heath, the medicalization and the pollical economy in health.

Twenty mater and PhD students on Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Systems, Public Health and Nursing, from diverse backgrounds and professions, attended the course.

The module was organised around the general theme of a discussion of current debates in the sociology of health, illness and medicine drawing on both theoretical analysis and empirical research. More specific themes inclued: the social construction of health and the changing boundaries between health and illness considering the impact of innovative technology; medicalisation the political sociology of health and medicine which explores the relationship between the state and powerful interests such as the pharmaceutical industry; the role of the media in the construction of health problems.

Students had the opportunity to critically assess evidence and arguments; to formulate problems; to propose possible solutions; and to recognize the influence of theoretical concepts and perspectives on the questions asked, evidence sought and solutions proposed.

Purpose This international comparison study compares the perspectives of actors who contribute to trust in the food system in four high income countries which have diverse food incident histories: Australia, New Zealand (NZ), the United Kingdom (UK) and the Island of Ireland (IOI), focusing on their communication with the public, and their approach to food system interrelationships.
